We have an upright red Japanese Maple, and it has dead branches on it after winter frost damage. How can I promote new shoots from the tree?

Carefully prune out the damage back to a live, healthy bud/shoot. Have a soil nutrient analysis undertaken and amend the soil as appropriate for the species. Combine this with an application of mulch (e.g woodchips) around the tree to promote vitality. It may also be well to protect the tree with horticultural fleece during harsh winter weather to minimize this in future. Bartlett Tree Experts can undertake all forms of plant health care and can provide a quotation for analysis and amendments if you require. You can make an appointment by clicking here.

[empty string] [empty string]
Uncover issues before they cause serious damage

Often by the time a tree shows outward signs of distress like early loss of leaves or decay, the underlying issue has already progressed to the late stages. As experts in local conditions and tree problems, Bartlett arborists meet with property-owners to provide tree and shrub inspections. This process is invaluable in uncovering issues before they cause serious damage.

During an inspection, an arborist can check the overall health of the trees, look for signs of pest and disease infestations, identify any structural problems, and determine soil requirements. Based on the information found, the arborist will then make recommendations on any treatments required. Much like a “doctor’s checkup,” this type of visit is essential to maintaining healthy trees.
We check the overall health of trees, look for infestations, and identify structural problems. Adjusting soil pH and ensuring adequate organic matter is present are also key to healthy soils. For plants in urban and suburban soils, Bartlett Tree Experts can simulate the optimal conditions for growth found in nature. In fact, our patented Root Invigoration process combines all the above into a single treatment to achieve this goal.

Bartlett offers the most intensive soil management programs in the landscape industry. Before fertilization is performed, soil samples are taken from the property and analyzed. Bartlett Arborists submit more than 10,000 soil samples from client properties each year, which provides information for developing fertilizers for specific geographic areas.

We offer more than 15 different blends of our own Boost ® fertilizers all of which contain slow-release nitrogen that provides this nutrient gradually over the entire growing season. This means that nitrogen is not lost to leaching and runoff, which optimizes availability, while protecting the environment. If soil phosphorus levels are adequate or treatments are applied in sensitive sites such as watersheds, we use phosphate-free Boost products that are specifically formulated to eliminate water pollution from this nutrient.
To thrive, trees require a healthy blend of nutrients in their soil. Adjusting soil pH so it is optimum for a plant species will ensure nutrients are continually available for improved vigour, flowering, and fruit yield. Organic matter is often deficient in urban and suburban soils and this is a key component for healthy soils. Organic matter improves soil nutrient and moisture retention, provides resistance to compaction, serves as a source of essential plant nutrients and enhances soil microbial populations that are essential to healthy soils. [empty string] [empty string]
Proper mulching improves the health of your trees and shrubs

When performed correctly, mulching is one of the most simple and effective practices to maintain plant health, improve growth, and enhance vitality.

Organic mulches composed of wood chips, bark, leaves (including pine needles), and compost are all suitable mulches for woody and herbaceous landscape plants. Ideally, mulch should be applied beneath the entire canopy, although smaller mulched areas are suitable. Mulch depth does not have to exceed ten centimetres. Indeed five centimetres of mulch is adequate on shallow rooted shrubs and perennials. Mulch beds do not have to be round or symmetrical. Irregular designs may be more aesthetically pleasing. Shrubs and perennials can be planted within the mulched areas but solid masses of ground covers should be avoided where tree growth is desired.

Mulch should not be piled against stems of trees and shrubs. Stem tissues are not intended to remain constantly moist from mulch accumulation. Insect and disease infestations, as well as stem girdling roots often develop on trees with excessive mulching.
Mulching is one of the most simple and effective practices to maintain plant health. [empty string] [empty string]
Determining the cause of tree and shrub health problems

One of the major reasons consumers initially contact an arborist is to determine the cause of a plant health problem or condition or to identify and treat a pest infestation. This is an area that Bartlett arborists excel in due to the continual training they receive on the latest problems and diagnostic techniques. The support our local arborists receive from the diagnostic facilities at the Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories allows us to service our clients in a way our competitors cannot. To that end, the Bartlett Plant Diagnostic Clinic analyzes more than 20,000 plant and soil samples each year to ensure accurate diagnosis and treatment programs.
Let us find the cause of a plant health problem or identify a pest infestation. 6 [empty string] 1 commercial-pruning.jpg [empty string] Pruning (Tree Trimming and Shrub Pruning) icon_pruning.png 16 Pruning is periodically required to improve the health and appearance of woody landscape plants. [empty string] [empty string]
Tree trimming and shrub pruning improves plant health

Pruning is a practice that is periodically required on all woody landscape plants.

Mature tree pruning

On mature trees, pruning is required to remove dead and dying branches to maintain plant health and safety. This pruning type is referred to as cleaning.

Young tree pruning

One aspect of pruning that is most frequently overlooked by consumers is structural pruning of young trees. Pruning trees when they are young and growing quickly is critical to ensuring a strong framework for future growth. This pruning focuses on maintaining a single dominant stem unless multiple stem "clumps" are specifically desired. Branches are pruned so their size remains proportional to the stem diameter at their point of attachment. As trees grow, some branches are removed to ensure adequate spacing between permanent scaffold limbs. The shape of the tree is maintained to provide a natural open grown form typical of the species.

Specialty pruning

Bartlett arborists can also develop and maintain formal pruning styles including pollarding, espalier, pleaching, and topiary. Fruit tree pruning is becoming increasingly popular as more consumers grow apples, pears, citrus, and other fruit bearing plants in their gardens. Vista pruning, which is judicious removal of branches to enhance a specific view from a defined location, is also frequently performed especially for consumers with homes near mountains or the shore.
Pruning is periodically required to improve the health and appearance of woody landscape plants.
